short story~ from a beginner author,,.
The Story of me…
The winds sizzled and embraced my cheek, blowing my hair making them dancing following the rhythm of nature. The brown pallor leaves blew following the wind path and dropped in front of me when the wind stopped. I stared at those leaves, they were so dried like my feeling right now. My mind recalled what had happened to me in past five years until I have been so dumb. Maybe it was not a Romeo and Juliet story or The Prince and Princess but it was a story of me… a story of how I had to choose one of the options...friend or future.., and this is my story.
The autumn had passed and came the winter. It was so cold as the drops of snow started to fall down to the earth. I waited below the shivering pine tree, waited for my friend, Alicia. It had been half an hour but she didn’t show up but I still waiting, not put on any thoughts of why she had been so late. A moment later, I saw her heading towards me, I waved to her and smiled. “Hi, Jenn. I’m so sorry I have been so late, the snow blocked my way, forgive me?” she apologized. “That’s okay, you have reason for that”, then we walked to the skating ring, we had promised to skate today as the weather was quite nice.
We skated happily above the ice, I could see Alice’s smile spread on her face. The sounds of birds chirping and the smooth breeze inspired us to be so ecstatic. “Alice, who are you in future?” I asked her when we were holding hands. “Errmm.., I don’t know, not plan anything yet but I’ll think about it, how about you?” I smiled to her. “Me? I wish I could be the best lawyer that everybody wants me to handle their cases...hehe”. “Ah, you’re so greed ah? Haha”, we laughed together and started to play snow ball.
Tomorrow morning, as usual, we walked together to the school. We passed through the same buildings and every morning we could see Mr. Hong feeding his dog in front of his house even in winter but he feeds his dog in the doghouse. “Jinn, do you know when is the scholarship exam?” I shook my head, “no, is it this Monday? Ha! I forgot to ask you, are you ready?”,she smiled. “Always..”, then she entered the school with arrogant smile..haha, she always like that but I knew and everybody knew, she was the smartest girl in this school. No wonder if she always ready for any exam. I entered the class and Mr. James came in. It’s Law class.. my favourite!
After recess, Miss Nelly entered my class. “I have something important to tell you all. As you already know, the scholarship exam will be held this Monday. I want everybody to prepare for this exam, ok?” I looked at Alicia. She smiled and there was confidence at her face. She certainly get the scholarship, so do I, we must struggle!
The bell rang, signed that the school hours were end. I waited Alicia at the school gate, she went to see Mr. Nelly to ask something that .. uh, I don’t know. After a moment, she came to me. “Sorry, I took so long .” “It’s okay, let’s go”, as we walked a few inches, Alicia fell down. I startled. “Alice! What’s wrong with you?” I picked her up and called for my mom. My mom sent her to the hospital. My heart began to tremble.
“Alice! Are you okay?” I asked her as she woke up. She smiled to me. “Don’t worry, I’m just too tired,” I saw her smile was fake. Yes, I knew it. I had been her friend for 3 years and I knew it wasn’t a true smile but I had to believe her. I knew Alicia was a strong girl. “Jenn, we have to study for the scholarship exam, can we?”. I smiled. “ Of course, let’s study for our future!” she laughed then we went home.
That night, we were studying with all our efforts but Alicia seemed so tired. She kept coughing and went to the bathroom. I heard she vomited. “Alice? Are you really okay?” she just kept smiling. “Don’t worry, maybe I ate something wrong, I had to go home now, keep study okay? Good luck,” I sent her to the front door and waved to her. I hoped she will be alright.
The exam day arrived. Alice and I answered with confidence but I saw Alice was not so well but she just smiled when I looked at her. Maybe she’s sleepy, I thought. When the bell rang, a smile spread on my face. I wish I could get the scholarship. I waited for Alice at the school gate. After an hour, I felt worried. I find her all over the school but I couldn’t find her. My heart began to tremble. I went to her house but there was nobody at home. Then, I received a message on my phone. I walked to the shelter in front of her house, avoiding snow drops. As I read the message, I felt like the sky had fallen on my head.
“ Jenn, I’m sorry for not telling you the truth. I had to follow my parents to Owl City for two months. I wish you got the scholarship. Wish me luck, okay?” -Alicia-
My tears rolled down on my cheek and dropped to the ground of snow. I stared at the pale sky, as fade as my feeling.. Alice, please do come back for me..
“Congratulations my dear!!” My mom kissed me on my cheek. Two months had passed and the result had been announced. I got the scholarship and an offer to study abroad. I find for Alice’s name. I put my finger on the name list and moved it along the paper..but, Icouldn’t find it. I tried for several times but I really couldn’t find it. I called her but it was no answer. Oh my God, I wished there was Alice’s name… Suddenly, my phone rang. “Alice! Are you back?” I could hear she coughed. “Yes and congrates for the scholarship.. when will you go abroad? I hope I can send you..” “Of course you can send me, why not? But, Are you sure you’re okay? Don’t be sad , okay?” “okay,”. Then, she hang up.
During the week before my leave to oversea, I kept hang out with Alicia.Along the outing, she looked so pale but every time I asked her, she just smiled. So, I pretend like nothing happened. “Jenn, do you remember you asked me what I want to be in future?” I nodded my head. “I have think about it and I wish I could be a great doctor. So that, I can cure many diseases..” I smiled at her. “Waah, your ambition is better than me, eh?” then she laughed but not with all her heart. I knew that.
The day had come. My family sent me at the airport. I felt so sad as I had to leave them for 5 years. Alicia couldn’t send me because she had a sudden matter, she said but she had give me a letter at our previous meet. “Jenn, read this when you got there,” she said to me.
I walked to the departure station and waved my family for the last time. Suddenly, I heard someone cried for my name. I searched for the voice and I saw Alicia’s mother ran to me. “ Jenn, Alicia…..”
I rushed to the Victoria Hospital, I need to see her for the last time, Alice!!Don’t leave me… “Alicia’s got a brain tumor and she can live for two months only and today she had been so sick from the morning. Her face was so pale. She didn’t want come to send you because she didn’t want you to know how sick she is…”
I stormed in to the Emergency Room and I saw a covered body on the bed. As I opened the cover, I hugged the body and cried with all my heart. My tears wet the blanket. “ Alice… why? Why you didn’t tell me?” then I remembered the letter, with a sad heart, I opened it and read…
“ Dear Jenn,
I was so grateful to have a friend like you. I was so sure God sent you to me as a gift in my life. You’re a such a nice friend who is always be by my side in tears or laugh.. please Jenn, be a great lawyer that nobody can defeat you.. fulfill your dream, I love you my friend, thanks for being my friend and sorry for every tears that dropped because of me..

I fell to the ground and black out.
That was past five years and now I have became a great lawyer that nobody can defeat me as Alice’s said. After the incident, I went study abroad and had a new life but still, I will remember my lovely friend Alicia forever. She was my soul and my spirit and that’s how the story ended. Maybe it wasn’t a great story but that was the story..the story of me.
